Free Bookshelf Plans

A clean, buildable bookshelf you can size to your wall — with a shelf-sag check built in.

Two side panels, a set of shelves, and a back — the bookshelf is the project that teaches you panels and load. The cut list and shopping list below come straight from the 3D model, so they already account for every shelf and spacer.

Change the height, width, or number of shelves in the editor and everything updates. Most importantly, the build check runs a sag calculation on each shelf: make a shelf too long for the material and the app warns you before your books turn it into a smile.

Tools you’ll need

How to build it

  1. Gather your lumber and hardware. Pick up the boards and fasteners from the shopping list. It’s optimized to minimize offcuts, so buy the counts shown.
  2. Cut your pieces. Cut each piece to the lengths in the cut list. The app can print a per-piece cut diagram for every board.
  3. Dry-fit and assemble. Lay the pieces out on a flat surface, check for square, then fasten them with the hardware listed.
  4. Check it holds, then finish. Confirm the design passes the build checks (sag, fasteners), then sand and finish to taste.

Frequently asked questions

How far can a bookshelf shelf span before it sags?

It depends on the material and load. Rather than guess, this plan runs a real sag check on each shelf in the app and warns you if a shelf is too long — add a divider or thicker stock and the warning clears.

What is the cheapest wood for a bookshelf?

Pine boards or 3/4" plywood with edge banding are the budget picks. Switch materials in the editor and the shopping-list price updates instantly.

How much lumber do I need for a bookshelf?

See the exact board-by-board shopping list below — it’s optimized to minimize offcuts, so you buy the right number of boards, not a guess.
